Hi everyone! First of all I'd like to thank Dr. Yatri Thor for creating this section/folder. Coming to the point, civil services preparation has entered a new phase, with most of the interactions being done online. To make the most of the resources scattered on the internet, every aspirant needs to be tech-savvy. In this section, we can discuss about the latest technological tools, that we need to streamline our preparation. They may be the latest downloaders, PDF creators, notemaking stuff like MS One Note/Evernote, antivirus, windows 8.1 and so on. Please create new threads for various queries. Looking forward to contributions from all the members, especially the geeks Thanks!

Good, Thanks for this initiative.....actually few technical tools are very important to go through various reports, e-books , news online etc......for example I read 'The Hindu' online, I use nitropdf to highlight things in pdf files (this is important, whatever you read highlight text for future revisions), you can go online on smallpdf.com and merge/compress your pdf files (when I give online test, I compress my 50-60 mb pdf file into 7-8 mb smaller version).....there are so many tools that make life easy in managing soft copies of notes, pdf files etc.....

1) for merging PDF files offline - pdf split and merge basic (http://www.pdfsam.org/download/) 2) for unlocking secure PDFs - www.pdfunlock.com/3) if you want to highlight in PDF - use Foxit Reader (I find it very good) 4) Mrunal’s Auto Notemaker for PDF - (http://mrunal.org/2012/10/tech-mrunals-auto-notemaker-for-the-hindu-pdf-files-grab-data-by-mouse-make-notes-without-typing.html)

Great. Just a thread I needed. I need to highlight certain lines in pdf file but the pdf was made from scanned images... so highlighter in adobe reader does not work... how do I highlight them? I read on my PC as well as on my android tab... please suggest a solution, if possible for both - PC and tab...

Try open source, try jdownloader v2 for instance; I haven't used IDM or DAP or any other accelerators in years now. As far as possible I don't use cracked versions of softwares if effective alternates are available which also happen to be free! jdownloader.org/download/offlineIt says beta and in test phase, but its fine; I have been using this one for more than a month now. The stable v1 (or was it 0.9) is available as default download, but it doesn't pick some sites nicely.

About the link that you provided, it works for x-86 & 64 right? And I should ignore the "Don't say you haven't been warned! " ? Another query, will it grab youtube videos also? Thanks! PS: I prefer free softwares too, especially after the latest debacle which resulted in disk formatting
